I volunteered as a radiology assistant. It was an amazing and humbling experience to help veterans and the underserved communities receive dental care. The radiologist showed me how to take dental x-ray images and even allowed me to take some pictures. There were a few veterans that had a gag reflex to the dental x-ray intraoral sensor, and I suggested a trick I learned from shadowing a general dentist - that if you dip the sensor in mouth wash, then the patient stops gagging. Thankfully this trick helped those veterans! I am looking forward to volunteering again next year as a D1 student.
