Time and Music According to Rumi

One of my favorite quotes is: "Art is how we decorate space, music is how we decorate time," by Jean-Michel Basquiat. Generally, space and time are abstract to comprehend but it is all around us. We occupy space and time through creative expression.

The 13th century poet Rumi wrote the poem below:

In my perspective, Rumi is explaining that time and music are mutually exclusive. Time feels confining, while music is liberating. In other words, music releases the shackles of time.

From the lines:"... if one of our instruments breaks... we have fallen into the place where everything is music," I interpret the instruments breaking as the dreaded feeling of time passing by and life is shortening (i.e. I imagine an hourglass breaking to symbolize the end of life; the sand representing time and transcending into music). Rumi reassures the reader that if we let go of the concept of time (break the instrument), what we get is music and peace.
